As we prepare for the 4th of July and all its trappings - fireworks, BBQ, family & friends - Girls in Tech Boise thought it was a great time to introduce you to a nonprofit dedicated to connecting the Web 2.0 generation and city services, Code for America. Modeled after (and inspired by) the Teach for America program, Code for America is an open source effort to help cities embrace the talent and skills of web developers to be more - more 'transparent, connected and efficient'.
The folks at Code for America has selected 5 innovative cities for its 1st cycle in 2011. These cities are:
Boston, MA
Philadelphia, PA
District of Columbia
Seattle, WA
Boulder, CO
The projects for each city are still being finalized, but you have an opportunity to apply to be a fellow on one of the projects. Its a great way to help city government transform and meet the demands of expanding service demands and limited resources - all with a tech twist. If selected as a fellow, you would need to be available in San Francisco for 11 months full time - from January 2011 to November 2011.
Just in time for the 4th of July, a little binary patriotic fun, courtesy of Code for America:
Brilliant! Code for America was kind enough to create 8 posters. We'll feature 1 a day. Pdf posters of this great binary art are available here (but no peeking at the other 7 - it'll ruin the surprise)!
And, if you are like me and want a little help with binary speak - translate the code here.
Its a great way to show your patriotism and geek out. Enjoy!
