  • Women in Tech - Progress is Being Made

Earlier this month, MBA Online created a terrific graphic illustrating women's increased participation in tech. Check it out! Have you noticed any changes in the tech sector in Boise? Who is thinking about starting a business? Who started a business in 2012? As you think about the goals you want to accomplish in 2013, give this chart some thought. Do you want to start a tech-based business? Are you interested in gaining more STEM education? Do you want to serve on a corporate board?

Let us know - we are here to help! Here's to more progress in 2013!

And a big thanks to our friend Britt Ide ((at)brittide on Twitter) with Ide Law & Strategy for bringing this infographic to our attention.

  • The Game of Books

Looking for a great holiday gift or stocking stuffer for the reader(s) in your life? Check out The Game of Books, a game engine for reading and a project by Boise's own Novel Projects (aka Booklamp). Aaron Stanton and his team have a project on Kickstarter to bring the game to life.

The good news is that they met their funding goal of $102,364 with hours to spare! The funds raised will provide access to The Game for schools and libraries. There is still time to contribute and be part of an exciting and educational game for readers of all ages. They would like to raise at least $110,000. With 2 hours left, they are at $108,038.

Every little bit moves them closer to their goal and puts The Game of Books in more schools and libraries around the world. If you are interested and able to contribute, check out The Game of Books on Kickstarter.

We just pledged a little - it was quick and painless. We are really excited to be part of this entrepreneurial aspect of our community and even more excited to see and play The Game of Books!

    Happy Holidays!

Even if you don't contribute to the project, its great to check in our one of our favorite local companies and entrepreneurs and see what they are up to.

  • Guest Post: Here's to Making Gold the New Pink

After reading this post about engineering toys for girls on the Girls in Tech Boise blog, I clicked the GoldieBlox link.  Hey, I've got a 6 year old girl and am tired of the same old toys in the pink aisle.  I watched their video.

After watching the video I was inspired to act.  I immediately shared the link on Twitter and supported them on Kickstarter.  The video was so good I felt like I didn't really have a choice.  My daughter NEEDS to have this.

With these toys, a girl not only builds the project, but builds an interest in engineering and science.  I want to give my daughter the opportunity to love engineering.  Maybe it won't click with her, but I want to give her the option of finding out.  Yes, she happens to like dress-up - there's nothing wrong with that.  It's just that she is a lot more than that.

I also want to support Debbie, this young woman who is starting her own business in GoldieBlox.  I admire her for aiming to solve a problem  by making the toy she wishes she had growing up.  I LOVE that motivation.  Even though I haven't experienced the actual product, I feel confident of its quality by watching the girls experience it in the video.  I couldn't help but smile, watching those girls learn with excitement.  And Debbie obviously did extensive product research and testing - I gasped a little when she said that boys like building and girls like reading.  So true!  Inserting the storytelling component is key!  Smart woman, that Debbie.

Soon after I backed GoldieBlox on Kickstarter, I received a thank you email along with an invitation to submit a video to have my kid star in their next video.  They provided their manifesto, a script of sorts, for the kids to recite.  I said a few lines aloud, had my daughter repeat after me, and before I knew it she had it memorized.  I caught some footage on my iPhone and emailed it to the GoldieBlox team.

And here is Chloe, at 1:22, saying "You can be anything. Go anywhere".

Thanks, GoldieBlox for helping to break down barriers.  Here's to making gold the new pink!
