Girls in Tech Boise was just handed the discount code for tickets for our members.  Use the code "tech" and receive $10 off the ticket price.  Who doesn’t like that?

Not sure what all the fuss is about?

In the words of Lisa McGrath, our fearless organizer, (our emphasis added):

“We know you’re not the average person, but did you know that in 54 hours, the average person sleeps about 17.5 hours, daydreams as many as 350 times, and spends almost 2.5 hours waiting in line?  At Startup Weekend, in 54 hours, you can launch your own startup.  And we’re working behind the scenes, assembling an impressive crew of sponsors, speakers, and advisors, to help you start it in 54.”

Follow them on Twitter and connect with the group on Ning.

We’ll see you May 21-23, at the Watercooler for Startup Weekend!

    March Lunch & Learn

    Posted on: 3/22/2010 8:57:57 AM | Comments (0)

    Sharon Larson

We had another really inspiring Lunch & Learn session with the girls from the Meridian Technical Charter High School this past week.

Lunch & Learns are a great opportunity for women working in technology to mentor young women and share their personal stories about working in the tech industry.

Sharon Larson, from Larson Sound LLC, was one of two speakers at the luncheon. Sharon shared her experience working as a sound engineer and in the tech industry. The girls listened as she spoke about how she got started in her career and what she likes best about working in technology.

Sharon said this about the Lunch & Learn event:

It was really cool being able to speak to high school girls who are interested in all things technical.  Most already have a career path in mind which I can relate to since I knew I wanted to be a sound engineer when I was 15.

In addition to talking about my career we spoke about the importance of work ethnic, attitude and networking.  I told them about some of the local film and television networking groups, internships and workshops as well as available internships available at Lucas Films and Pixar.

In addition I let them know that the next Audio Engineering Convention is in San Francisco this November and that if they are interested in this line of work then they should try to attend because the AES has many great student programs including a job fair and college fair.

Thank you Sharon for volunteering your time to speak to these girls about your career in technology! We believe that giving these young girls real-world mentors helps pave the way for opening their minds up to new and exciting career opportunities in technology.

If you're interested in volunteering for future Lunch & Learns, please contact us.

The IP of Yuzz and Fun You Should Have

    Posted on: 3/2/2010 3:27:16 PM | Comments (0)

‘My alphabet starts with this letter called yuzz. It's the letter I use to spell yuzz-a-ma-tuzz. You'll be sort of surprised what there is to be found once you go beyond 'Z' and start poking around!’

     ~Dr. Seuss

Who knows what you’ll find when you push through and beyond in that research or those ideas you have?  Dr. Seuss knew.  Elizabeth Schierman knows too.  Bring your questions about patents, trademarks, copyrights, or intellectual property and join us at Girls in Tech, March 3rd (tomorrow) from 5:45pm-7:00pm at the WaterCooler (1401 W. Idaho).

We know that March just started (and are loving that it came in like a lamb) but what a crazy month!  In addition to Kickstand on March 11th ('My First Year as a VC' by Glenn Michael and George Mulhern) and TechBoise activities (March 31st), there's Jelly on Thursday at Alia's Coffehouse (908 Main Street) from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.  If Jelly doesn’t fit into your schedule this week, maybe you can join us the 18th when we’ll be at Season Bistro in Eagle (1117 E. Winding Creek Rd, Ste. 150) from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Next week kicks off with the INL Scholastic Tournament at BSU featuring some very scary smart teens from high schools around the state.  The event takes place March 8th and 9th.Its billed as a fun bowl, but we always come away thinking there's a lot we didn't learn in school.  For additional information, contact Leandra at 426-4432.

Code Camp and TechFest are right around the corner too – March 27th and 28th at BSU.  You have until March 12th to get your submission in for a session.  Speak, volunteer, attend – the sky’s the limit at this FREE event.

Speaking of submissions, Ignite Boise 4 is waiting to hear from you.  The deadline to submit is 5:00 pm, March 19th

As always, Beer and Blog will meet at the Falcon Tavern every Tuesday at 5:30 pm.  Who knows, maybe they’ll have green eggs and ham on the menu in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

This is just a hint of the activities that await this month.

Hope to see you there!  Because ‘i
f you never did, you should. These things are fun, and fun is good.’  Ah, you gotta love Dr. Seuss.
